Ingram Claims Singles and Doubles Titles at Stringlab Junior Champs
After three days of high quality tennis at the Stringlab Hobart Junior Championships play has come to a close. In testing conditions at the picturesque Domain Tennis Centre all events were thoroughly entertaining with many matches decided by a few points.
For the first time this year 10/U events were added to the championships with great results. Green modified balls were used for these events with many close matches played throughout. In the end it was recent Medibank Healthy Attitude Award winner Victoria Fish claiming three hard fought victories over her opponents whilst on the boys side it was Thomas Haan who stormed through the competition claiming a comfortable win over eight year old Jake Elmer.
Once again the 12/U boys and girls was a tight tussle with top seeds Ben Cawston and Charlotte Ingram reigning supreme. For Cawston this was a stunning end to his 12/U career where he remains perfect from all 12/U events in 2013. In the girls Ingram was clinical through her preliminary matches, continuing this form into the knock out rounds with a hard fought 6-3, 6-3 victory over Victorian Amy Stevens. In doubles action the giant killing duo of William Gibson and Luke Vuletic eked through a tough first set en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory. In the girls it was Ingram partnering Meg Radford to claim a classic final over Lucy Allwright and Sophie Johnstone 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
14 & under action was next with the boys singles taking stage. In a battle of the top seeds final is was second seeded Remy Lynch rallying from a set down to claim a remarkable comeback over top seeded Thomas Cornish. For Lynch it was his first triumph this year (in Hobart) whilst for Cornish his doubles win over Lynch squared the ledger.
Last up was the 16 & under events with stellar play throughout. Girls hit the court first with Sanyukta Singh claiming some hard fought preliminary rounds before hitting her straps in the final defeating Eliane Fader 6-2, 6-2. Like Cawston Singh stays perfect on the year. In the girls doubles Singh paired third place competitor Hannah Coombe to squeak through the title match against Eliane Fader and Jessica Fowler. With one set a piece it was Coombe and Singh claiming a nail biting tie break by 10 points to 8. In boys singles action it was second seeded Daniel Groom who claimed a comfortable dispatch of top seeded Nicholas Fader to claim the title. In a closer than the score line indicated final it was Groom’s determination and ability to win the important points that proved the difference in a high quality final. To round out the tournament the boys doubles final didn’t disappoint with some phenomenal skills and play on hand. In the end it was the top seeded duo of Daniel Groom and Thomas Cornish defeating Nicholas Fader and Remy Lynch 6-3, 6-1.
In yet another great tournament played in high spirits and great sportsmanship our focus now moves to Launceston which plays host to the Launceston Junior Championships. Thanks to all participants and parents for your patience with the weather and we look forward to seeing you all soon.
